Internet connection sharing
It is the 'killer app' of a
home network
. Often it is the driving force behind setting up a home
network. Internet connection sharing can be done with almost any kind of
connection including cable modems, DSL modems, ISDN, dial-up, satellite, fixed
wireless, etc.
Internet connection sharing solutions fall into three
major categories, software based solutions, broadband routers, and multi-IP
solutions.
The type of Internet connection sharing available to you
will be determined by the type of Internet connection you have. Explore
the Internet connection type that you have.
Cable modems may be the most readily available broadband
internet connection followed closely by DSL. They can reach nearly every
home that has access to digital cable television.

|
Cable modems boast some of the fastest download
speeds. Unlike DSL, you can not yet purchase different service levels to increase
the bandwidth available. |
|
Shared Bandwidth
|
|
Cable modems work by assigning upload and download 'channels'
to communities of people in your neighborhood. Although your download speed
might be capped at 7Mbps, that bandwidth is shared by many people in your
neighborhood. If someone runs a streaming audio server or other server that
sends a lot of data, they could tie up the upload channel for 20 or 30
people making their Internet access much slower than it should be.

Multiple IP |
|
Broadband providers like cable modem and DSL companies
always suggest getting multiple IP address’ to connect multiple computers
to their modem. This may work fine for surfing and email, but can be a
huge headache and security risk for sharing files and printers. Of course,
the broadband providers do not tell you this because they usually get to
charge you extra money for each computer this way. This article will
explain why this is a bad idea.
Most broadband companies will help you get multiple
computers on the Internet by selling you additional IP address. You will
need a hub or a switch between your cable modem and computers but little
else is needed. Both computers can get to the Internet, but the whole
Internet can get to both of your computers too! So, don't forget about
